🎯

Multifeed Drills

Coach feeds multiple shuttles in sequence so you can focus purely on technique and movement without worrying about rallying.

🔄

Dynamic Feed Drills

The coach feeds and hits back, creating a live-ball scenario that builds reaction, timing, and shot consistency under realistic conditions.

Dynamic Live Drills

Structured drills between one or more live players using a single shuttle — combining technique practice with real game pressure.

🧠

Supervised Play

Play live games while the coach observes and provides real-time feedback, strategy tips, and tactical guidance during gameplay.

👣

Footwork

Court movement, positioning, split-step timing, and recovery — the foundation that makes every other skill more effective.

💬

Coach Feedback

Throughout the session, the coach identifies patterns in your play and offers targeted corrections to accelerate improvement.

🎯

Training Participants

Players participating in training sessions are expected to follow coach instructions, participate safely and attentively, avoid disrupting active drills or instruction, and respect the learning opportunities of other participants. Program staff may reassign training groups or participants based on skill level, safety, attendance, or program needs.

Training + Open Play

Players who join training can also participate in open gym the same day — before or after their session — at no extra charge. Get structured coaching and casual court time in one visit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before your first visit — or your hundredth.

I've never played badminton. Is this for me?
Absolutely. We welcome true beginners and actively encourage newcomers. Open gym is relaxed and social — experienced players are happy to help first-timers learn. Want a more structured intro? Let us know when you arrive.
Do I need to bring my own racket?
Yes — players must bring their own racket. Rackets are not provided. If you're just getting started, entry-level rackets are widely available at sporting goods stores and online for a reasonable price. We're happy to offer recommendations.
Do I need to bring my own shuttlecocks?
Yes — players must bring their own shuttlecocks. Shuttles are not provided at open gym sessions. Check with your group on which type (feather or nylon) to bring before your first session.
What's the difference between open gym and training?
Open gym is casual drop-in play using a group rotation format on shared courts. Training is a structured, coach-led session (~1 hour) on dedicated courts covering drills, footwork, strategy, and supervised play with feedback. Training pricing depends on how many players attend that session: $30/person for under 5, $25 for 5–10, and $20 for 10+. Payment is collected at the end of the training session. Players who join training can also participate in open gym the same day at no extra charge.
Can players under 18 participate?
Yes. Youth players are welcome. Players under 18 require a parental or guardian signature on the liability waiver before participating. A parent does not need to stay during the session, but must complete the waiver. Youth-specific training is offered when demand warrants it.
Is West Metro Badminton affiliated with Wayzata High School?
No. West Metro Badminton is an independently organized community program. We rent gym space at Wayzata High School but have no affiliation with the school's athletics department, staff, or administration. We are a separate, privately run community initiative.
What shoes do I need?
Non-marking athletic court shoes are required — lighter-colored rubber soles that don't scuff gym floors. Most running shoes or cross-trainers work fine. Outdoor shoes, cleats, or dark-soled shoes are not permitted. This rule is strictly enforced to protect the school's gym floor.
Where do I enter the building?
Enter through the Athletics Entrance at the back of Wayzata High School. Once inside, go right, walk through the cafeteria, take the door on the left, continue past the weight room, and Gyms 7 & 8 will be on your right. Follow posted signs for Gyms 7 & 8 once inside.
How do I find out about cancellations or schedule changes?
The live Google Calendar on the Schedule page is always the most current source. You can also add it directly to your own Google Calendar using the "Add to Google Calendar" button on the Schedule page. We also post updates on social media.
Can I come just to watch without playing?
Of course — come check it out! Non-players are welcome to observe from the sidelines. If you decide to join mid-session, just let the coordinator know. No obligation to play if you want to watch first.
